The fool, the lazy, and the mouth!

We are back in Proverbs today, and the reading deals with patience, self-control, the tongue, the fool, and the lazy. Yes, it is jam-packed with wisdom that makes the flesh uncomfortable! Let’s quickly look at the fool, the mouth, and the lazy.

Proverbs 26:1-12 discusses how frustrating it is to deal with a fool! Everything about them is frustrating! You can’t imagine all the ways they are foolish! They have no honor; they only understand a rod on their back. Answering their arguments is a waste of time, yet they think they are all the wiser if you don’t. They can’t be trusted. A proverb in their mouth sounds ridiculous. They do not benefit their employer. Sadly, they return to their foolishness like a dog to its vomit. Wow, Proverbs does not hold back on the fool! Basically, you can’t work with them.

Proverbs 26:13-16 discusses the lazy. Interestingly, the lazy are convinced they are wise. Lazy people consider themselves smarter than seven wise counselors. (Proverbs 26:16, NLT) They have no hesitation telling you how to do something “smarter,” not “harder,” while the only thing that truly wears them out is lifting their fork to their mouth!

And then there is the mouth! Proverbs 26:17-28 is pure gold. Say little and have little trouble. Be careful of what you say; it will come back on you. Don’t believe everything you hear from others—take it all with a grain of salt. Remember that the nice things others say can differ significantly from how they feel. Rumors are like a delicacy—everyone gets excited about them. Quarrels are full of heat, so remove the heat source (words), and the fire will go out. And watch out for smooth words; they are the most deadly. Wow—lots to meditate on!

Thank you for joining me as I read and journal chronologically through the Bible! This devotional reflection comes from Proverbs 25-26.
