Anticipating Our Lord’s Return!

Matthew chapter 25 focuses on anticipating the return of Christ. This chapter records Jesus speaking to His disciples and includes two parables: the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids and the Parable of the Three Servants. At the end of the chapter, Jesus reveals what it means to serve Him while He is absent. From this, we learn that those who anticipate Christ’s return do three things:

First, they manage their time well. The Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids speaks to staying vigilant while anticipating the Lord’s return, as opposed to those who become drowsy, careless, and sleepy. When lulled by the world’s distractions, it’s easy to forget to prepare for the Lord’s return with the time we have been given.

Secondly, those who anticipate Christ’s return manage their gifts well for Christ and His kingdom. As believers, we have all been entrusted with gifts for God’s use and glory. While we await His coming, what kind of return are we seeking to gain for our Lord, as seen in the Parable of the Three Servants?

Thirdly, as a result of the first two points, those who anticipate the return of Christ serve Him well. “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ (Matthew 25:37–40, NLT)

Are we anticipating Christ’s return? A great King is on His way!
