A Spectacle To The Unbelieving!

Ezekiel has been warning God’s people for 32 chapters. The results are dismal! No one has responded! There are no salvations and baptisms to report to headquarters. By today’s standards, pragmatism would have changed the method and the message at this point in search of results. But God comforts Ezekiel by reminding him that the results are not for him to manufacture. His job is to remain faithful to the message that God has given him. But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul. (Ezekiel 33:9, ESV) Ezekiel finds comfort in obeying the Lord despite the results.

So, why has there been no repentance? God allows us and Ezekiel to peer into the hearts and private moments of the people. In Ezekiel 33:30-33, God reveals that the people talk about Ezekiel in their homes, whisper to one another about him, and even come and sit before him to hear what he has to say. But their actions are not sincere. They have no intention of following God’s Word. Their interest is purely self-serving. They find it entertaining, like a trip to the theater.

This situation reminds me of what the Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 4:9, where he and the Apostles were made a spectacle to the world. In another place, the writer of Hebrews recalls how his audience was publicly ridiculed in Hebrews 10:33. Christians have a message for the world, and we are not to alter it for the sake of results. Even though the world may view our message as foolishness and us as ridiculous, we are to remain obedient and faithful, living out the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Just as Jesus endured the ridicule of sinners on the cross, in Him, we can find strength to be obedient in the face of such indifference and opposition. (Hebrews 12:1–3)

Thank you for joining me as I read and journal chronologically through the Bible! This devotional reflection comes from Ezekiel 32-34.

A peek behind the curtain!

In my chronological Bible reading plan, I got to peek behind the inner curtain of the Tabernacle! This was a very restricted place! Only Aaron could enter. He could only enter once a year, on a particular day, and in a certain way. One mistake and he would die! Behind this inner curtain dwelled the very presence of God! This verse stood out as I got a peek behind the veil.

The Lord said to Moses, “Warn your brother, Aaron, not to enter the Most Holy Place behind the inner curtain whenever he chooses; if he does, he will die. For the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—is there, and I myself am present in the cloud above the atonement cover. (Leviticus 16:2, NLT)

Wow! Access to God was very restrictive! As I thought about this curtain between God and Israel, Jesus came to mind! During Jesus’ crucifixion, something amazing happened to this curtain.

Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom… (Matthew 27:50–51, NLT)

What does this mean? It means Jesus opened up direct access to God through His death!

And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. (Hebrews 10:19–20, NLT)

Remembering the reading this morning, Aaron could not enter the Most Holy Place whenever he wanted to; it was only once a year. But now, because of Jesus, and only through Jesus, we can access God at any time! Instead of a peek behind the curtain, Jesus took away the curtain!

What does this mean? God, through His Son, brings us close to Himself! Believer, rejoice! As Hebrews 10:22 says, “…Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him.” We can go to God anytime!

Today’s reading: Leviticus 16-18 | Tomorrow’s reading: Leviticus 19-21

The new life-giving way!

Leviticus! Here we are! I once heard someone say that if they only had two hours to live, they would start reading Leviticus because it would make those two hours seem like days. Maybe! But in the details are some soul-enriching truths! In this morning’s reading of chapters 1-4, God details the procedures for several types of offerings.

In all the detail, two phrases stood out to me and were repeated several times; “…a pleasing aroma to the LORD,” and “…making them right with the LORD…they will be forgiven.” Yes, God is Holy, and Israel was sinful. But that didn’t stop God from wanting to dwell with His people! So God made a way! A way for sinful people to be made right with a Holy God.

As I thought about this system of sacrifices, how it pleased God, and how God granted forgiveness, I couldn’t help but think of Jesus in these following verses.

And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:19–22, NLT)

Jesus, what a breath of fresh air in a toxic world full of sin and darkness! Jesus, how He calms the heart and clears the conscience of guilt! Jesus, how He makes us clean through His blood so that we are accepted by God! Jesus, the new and life-giving way! Believers, this is our God, this is who He is…let’s rejoice!
